Hiring a designer (optional)

If you want to hire a designer, you can find many of them on creative portfolio sites like Dribbble and Behance, or freelance sites like Upwork.

Before making a hiring decision, make sure to review the portfolios of the designers you are screening.

NDA

  • Once you hire someone, you need to think about having them sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) so that legally they can’t share any of your ideas or documents, or anything they produce for you, with anyone else.
  • If you’re using a freelance platform like Upwork, it should have an implicit NDA built into the hiring process. Double check to Terms and Conditions to be sure.
  • If you’re using a designer off-platform, have them explicitly sign an NDA. Here’s a sample NDA. You can have them electronically sign the NDA using a tool like HelloSign.

Provide the designer with your wireframes so they have the blueprints for each screen in your product.

The designer should work in batches of a few screens at a time and wait for your approval before continuing to the next batch. This will reduce wasted time, effort, and money if the design goes off track.

Finally, it’s best if they use a design handoff platform/website, like Zeplin.io, which makes the hand off of design artifacts, style guides, and specifications from the designer to developers easy and clear.
